Educators are concerned over findings from the federal government’s Productivity Commission inquiry into childcare and early childhood learning.

Early childhood union United Voice is worried the report, to be released at the end of October, will have negative implications for the sector.

United Voice Tasmanian branch secretary Jannette Armstrong said the benefits of early childhood education were immediate and lifelong.

‘‘We can’t afford not to have a quality early childhood sector which meets children’s developmental needs and which is affordable and accessible,’’ she said.

‘‘The positive impacts continue down the line, in terms of improved secondary school literacy rates and higher employment rates.’’

Palmer United Party senator Jacqui Lambie called on Prime Minister Tony Abbott to  boost funding to the sector.

‘‘We go to work knowing our kids are in good care and they’re learning every day in these centres,’’ Senator Lambie said.

‘‘Get rid of the paid parental leave and start spending it here, start making it more affordable for parents to put kids into childcare.’’

Braddon MHR Brett Whiteley rejected Senator Lambie’s and United Voice’s claims.

He said the government had no intention to cut funding to the sector.

‘‘We have to get the balance right between what the government should contribute to this care and the roles and responsibilities for families.

‘‘It’s tempting to connect the paid parental leave to childcare funding but it’s very unwise, they are two different things.’’
