Childcare cuts will cost parents: Labor

THE coalition’s planned review of a childcare workers fund will mean lower wages for staff and higher fees for parents, Labor says.

The coalition claimed on Thursday that it would, if elected, undertake a ministerial review of the Early Years Quality Fund (EYQF) establishment process and its operation.

It would honour funds contracted from the EYQF but no further expenditure will be approved.

Labor campaign spokesperson Penny Wong said changes to the EYQF would jeopardise salary increases for childcare workers.

“It means childcare workers around the country risk having their wages cut or stopping any wage increase that they had already factored in,” Senator Wong told reporters in Melbourne on Friday.

Senator Wong said parents were at risk of being slugged with a fee increase to pay for wage rises already provided.

“If those childcare centres have already provided those wage increases, the only way those centres can provide the funding for the wage increases is to push fees up,” Senator Wong said.

Under the coalition policy, any increase to the salaries of childcare employees will be a matter for the Fair Work Commission and their employers.

However, all remaining funds in the EYQF will be retained in the childcare portfolio.

“On child care, what does the coalition want? Lower wages for child care workers, higher fees for parents,” Senator Wong said.
