Childcare workers may not receive pay rise after Early Years Quality Fund (EYQF) put under review

Childcare workers may not receive a promised pay rise after news the Federal Government will review a dedicated fund to boost wages.

Sussan Ley, the Assistant Minister for Education, has levelled her harshest criticism yet at the $300 million Early Years Quality Fund (EYQF), rolled out by the former government earlier this year.

The fund was intended to provide a pay boost for two years for certified educators and teachers in full-day childcare centres.

Ms Ley told the ABC the Labor government had established “a dodgy fund, set up in a hurry, sorted out with (their) union mates”.

She says the fund was badly planned and unfairly favoured childcare workers who are union members.

“It was only ever going to apply to 30 per cent of the workforce, and then only the workforce in long day care centres,” she said.

“Basically, just the workforce that has union membership.”

The Coalition says the fund is under review, which is expected to be completed near the end of the month.

However, two big unions representing childcare workers say the EYQF was at least a good start.

Both United Voice and the Independent Education Union have launched applications with the Fair Work Commission to increase wages for workers, certified educators and qualified teachers.

But any decision from the commission may be nearly two years away.

In the meantime, childcare workers like Sara Zappia at Abbotsford Long Day Care Centre in Sydney will just have to wait.

“It’s hard for me to be so passionate and into my work when I’m not really getting paid for the recognition of what I do,” Ms Zappia said.

The EYQF would have resulted in wage increases for about a third of Australia’s childcare staff.
