Federal inquiry into childcare, early learning accessibility set up

The Federal Government has set up a Productivity Commission inquiry into childcare and early childhood learning.

It fulfils an election promise made by the Coalition and will examine how childcare can become more flexible, affordable and accessible.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott says childcare should be responsive to the needs of today’s families, who do not always work the traditional five-day, nine-to-five week.

The Productivity Commission will hold public hearings and take submissions before reporting back by the end of October next year.

The organisation which represents the majority of daycare providers has welcomed the commitment.

Australian Childcare Alliance spokeswoman Gwynn Bridge says a widespread inquiry is important.

“We do need some answers,” she said.

“I wish we were getting them a lot faster than the end of 2014. But we do know that the Productivity Commission will need that time, because it is a huge and complex sector.”
