He says the KindyNow app has changed all this. “Not only is it a great tool to increase revenue but what we think it’s really best at is a booking tool,” he says. “We don’t need to get involved as parents can do all the cancelling and booking from their smartphones.”

Mr Collins initially pitched the KindyNow idea to G8 Education, the largest commercial childcare centre provider in Australia. He asked them if he built an application that managed their enrolments, would they trial it.  “They said yes and we began working with Kidsoft, a childcare software provider to develop it,” he says.

Since then, growth has been positive. “We generated $12,000 in bookings in the first month and by the third month we did over $50,000,” Mr Collins says. “We first worked with the Eclipse group and then with G8 Education in five of their locations. Since then we’ve added 20 more G8 locations as well as nine centres from provider, Kids Choice.”

The app is available to download from the iTunes Store and Google Play.

Mr Collins says assuming the uptake continues to go well, he’d like to roll out the app across all centres, including 400 of G8 Education’s.

There are about 8000 childcare centres in Australia, with more than 500,000 children enrolled each day, making the potential for growth huge. Mr Collins believes it’s a no-brainer for childcare centres as they are already receiving money from the parents of the child who is absent. But this is a way to earn extra revenue. He says, on average, a centre can make an extra $4000-$5000 a month by allowing parents to make bookings 24/7.

“Over a year this can be another $50,000-$60,000, which apart from the immediate benefit can add $200,000 to $300,000 to their business sale price in the future,” he says.

Parents need to be registered with that childcare centre in order to apply for a vacant spot. Collins adds the app is also the only way for parents to get any money back if their child is absent. “This is because if we resell a spot that a parent has already paid for, we give them some money back. Right now, if you don’t attend you don’t get anything back but through KindyNow you do. The amount varies, but at the moment it’s between $20-$50.”

Parents don’t pay anything to make bookings; childcare centres are charged a monthly management fee of $19 and a fee per booking that varies between $3-$10 depending on vacancies sold and absentees resold.

To protect his investment in the app, Mr Collins has taken out three innovation patents that have been approved. The next goal is getting them approved in the US where they are currently pending. After that he’ll take it globally.

Eclipse Learning’s Mr Ellis says 50 per cent of parents downloaded the app in the first two days after he told them about it. “Then within a fortnight, 90 per cent had downloaded it,” he says. “Our centres are now always full. I believe the more you can automate these type of tasks, the more time staff have to spend on what they are good at – looking after the kids.”
